About this hymn

A familiar story attributes this poem to the Canadian teenager Featherston, but the surviving evidence is less tidy. Its earliest known appearance is an anonymous six-stanza text in a London periodical in 1862, later shortened to the usual four stanzas. The attribution to Featherston comes from relatives’ recollections in the early twentieth century; a family testimony for Duffield also survives within the British Methodist tradition. Neither side has a manuscript. The responsible approach acknowledges that authorship remains uncertain instead of presenting the more moving account as established fact. The poem itself follows love from being loved first and redemption through the cross to death and glory, echoing First John’s teaching that receiving God’s love comes before our love for the Lord.
