The glory of God · Goodness and provision
Psalm 9:1 begins, “I will give thanks to Yahweh with my whole heart. I will tell of all your marvelous works.” Wholeheartedness is the key: thanksgiving here is a decision, rather than something that rises and falls with mood. Psalm 107:1 gives the reason: “Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.” The reason rests with him rather than with how my day has gone. The lively melody suits opening worship, Thanksgiving and year-end services. If the congregation is in difficulty, remind them before singing that God's goodness is the basis of thanks, rather than everything going smoothly.
