Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
This hymn rests the assurance of salvation on Jesus’ work of laying down his life and his promise to welcome sinners. When our own performance, feelings or failures shake us, we can ponder afresh what the Saviour has already accomplished. First Corinthians points out that faith relies on God’s power; because Christ has opened the way to the Father for us, Hebrews urges believers to come before him with sincere hearts. This assurance also needs the continuing teaching of Scripture, so that we understand more of the Lord in whom we believe. Singing can help new believers learn to entrust sin and fear to Christ and, with the church’s companionship, build a life of prayer, learning and obedience.
