The longing in this hymn extends from knowing Jesus’ grace and redemption to listening to his word, doing his will and hoping for his Kingdom. Such knowledge involves our whole relationship with the Lord, requiring the Holy Spirit’s guidance and continued learning through Scripture. In Philippians, Paul counts knowing Christ as his greatest treasure and desires deeper fellowship with him in the power of his resurrection and in his sufferings; John points out that the Holy Spirit leads people into truth and glorifies Christ. Singing can become a prayer before Bible reading: asking the Lord to correct our preconceptions so that the truth we learn enters how we treat people, serve and persevere. Through specific acts of obedience each day, we come to know the Saviour more deeply.
