The pilgrim journey · Companionship and guidance
Following Psalm 23, this work sings from the Shepherd’s provision and guidance to his companionship in the dark valley, then towards the hope of receiving grace throughout life. Images of green pastures, a table and a dwelling portray how God cares for and welcomes those who belong to him; walking in paths of righteousness also makes trust include an obedient willingness to be led. In the psalm, speaking about the Lord gradually becomes speaking directly to him, with particular intimacy amid danger. The church can first read the passage and then sing this song, bringing everyone’s present circumstances into prayer. When caring for the sick or grieving, leave unhurried space so that familiar Scripture can accompany them as they slowly name their fears and hopes.
