Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement

About this hymn

This Cantonese song first considers the conditions and reservations in human love, then turns its gaze to the cross. Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13). The gospel goes further: “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). The beloved were then in a position of hostility. ‘Without reserve’ in the title expresses this weight: God gave his only Son and held nothing back. There is no need to heighten sentiment when singing it. Explain the cross clearly, and gratitude will follow.

When to use this hymn

Holy Week and pre-Easter meditation, evangelistic gatherings and Gospel Sundays; congregational singing in Cantonese services.
