Revelation 1:7 says, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. Even so, Amen.” The hymn almost unfolds that verse, presenting the return as solemn and even fearful. Those who see him include everyone, beyond the redeemed alone. The second stanza particularly recalls those who pierced him: the wounds remain, and the glorified one is still the crucified one. Modern teaching on his return can offer only comfort or only alarm. This hymn holds both and ends in the final prayer “Yes, come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20). British tradition sings it on Advent's first Sunday, matching the readings about the last things.
The first Sunday of Advent and Sundays on the last things; teaching on Revelation 1 or the Lord's return.
