The pilgrim journey · Mission and the gospel
In John 12:32, Jesus says, “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” The next verse explains that he was indicating how he would die. Being lifted up thus means both crucifixion and exaltation, the double meaning on which this hymn's title rests. Kitchin wrote the original in 1887 for a mission gathering; Newbolt revised it in 1916 into its present form. It was sung in a procession led by a cross, with the refrain repeatedly calling for its lifting. It suits mission Sundays and Holy Week.
