About this hymn

Through the image of being securely upheld, this hymn expresses believers’ security and joy on the heavenly road. The promise of everlasting arms in Deuteronomy gives our reliance a firm object; Hebrews also helps us face fear through the Lord’s promise never to forsake us. The nearness and peace in the song come from the Lord’s presence, reminding weary people that they can relinquish the pressure of holding everything up alone. As we sing together, the congregation can remind one another that we are travelling under the care of the same Lord. We can turn one worry into a specific prayer and accept brothers and sisters’ companionship when needed, putting the reliance we sing into practice through daily trust and walking together.

When to use this hymn

Comfort amid affliction, older people’s gatherings, pastoral visits and worship on trust.
