Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
This hymn asks the Saviour to lead us in remembering the road of his suffering, from Gethsemane to the cross and the tomb, pondering afresh the price he paid for us. Luke connects the Lord’s institution of Communion with the testimony of his Passion and resurrection, and the church remembers his self-giving in the breaking of bread. Such remembrance can awaken a cold heart and ground dedication in gratitude. As we sing, we can quietly examine what we have put at the centre of our lives and entrust to Christ the matters in which we need to obey. His completed redemption gives us strength to bear the cost of following him and to face our own weakness with the hope of resurrection.
Communion, Holy Week, preparation for Easter and prayers of dedication.
