The pilgrim journey · Companionship and guidance
Newman wrote this in the Mediterranean on 16 June 1833 while returning to England after illness, his ship becalmed for a full week in the Strait of Bonifacio. In his later poetry collection it was titled The Pillar of the Cloud, drawing on Exodus (early publications used other headings): “Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light” (Exodus 13:21). The poem asks only for the next step’s light rather than sight of a distant destination. The second stanza admits a former preference for choosing one’s own path in pride, now relinquished. Taking one step through fog fits believers facing uncertainty. Psalm 43 prays similarly: “Oh, send out your light and your truth. Let them lead me.” (Psalm 43:3). Newman was still an Anglican minister when he wrote it, entering the Catholic Church twelve years later. The hymn endured in both traditions’ hymnals.
