Confession and repentance · Confession and returning
The story of the prodigal son shows those who repent the love of a father who takes the initiative to welcome them. Following the sequence of leaving, turning back and being accepted, this song acknowledges that we have given our hearts to temporary things and asks that we may love the Lord more deeply through the years that remain. Luke 15 helps us understand the father’s mercy, while 1 John 2 reminds us to distinguish worldly desires from God’s will, which endures. When leading prayers of confession, first read the passage about the prodigal returning home, so that those who grieve may find courage to turn back in the father’s kindness. Our response can also be concrete: repairing a relationship, relinquishing a habit that controls us, making time afresh to draw near to the Lord and asking mature fellow believers to accompany us.
Prayers of confession, the prodigal son’s return and renewed commitment.
