Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement

About this hymn

This hymn contemplates the sinless Son giving himself for sinners and turns meditation on the cross into a prayer to receive cleansing. John uses the title of the Lamb to point to Jesus’ mission of taking away sin; 1 Peter explains that our redemption rests on Christ’s precious blood. Singers therefore see both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s initiative in showing grace. At Communion or Passion services, the song can lead the congregation in honest confession and in thanking God in faith for redemption already accomplished. The Lord’s sacrifice opens the way of reconciliation with him and calls us to leave our former way of life, learning to love the Lord and other people as those who have received grace.

When to use this hymn
