The pilgrim journey · Prayer and drawing near
When the soul is dry, even prayer can feel difficult. The title borrows the longing imagery of Song of Songs 1. This song brings a faint cry before the heavenly Father, asking him to renew our willingness to draw near, know and follow him. Psalm 63 describes longing for God; in Exodus, Moses also asks the Lord to show him his ways so that he may know him. These passages help us ground prayer in continuing trust. During personal devotions or retreats, read quietly before honestly telling the Lord of inward distance and weariness. The desire for nearness to him also needs daily practice to carry it: time set aside for prayer, companionship with fellow members, obedience learned in specific choices, and reliance on the life Christ gives.
