Redeeming grace · Resurrection and victory

About this hymn

In a compact narrative, this song moves from waiting in darkness through the incarnation, cross, resurrection and birth of the church to the reign of the King of kings. Philippians 2 reveals the Son’s humiliation and exaltation; 1 Corinthians 15 places his death, burial and resurrection at the centre of the gospel. If the congregation sings only of majestic kingship, it is easy to overlook the road from the throne to the cross. Using the whole song as one connected work lets us see the triune God’s redemption, the victory of the Lamb and the Holy Spirit establishing the church. It suits Christmas and Easter and can also serve as a shared confession of faith.

When to use this hymn

Christmas, Christ’s Passion and Easter, Gospel Sundays and congregational confession of faith; use the whole song as one connected work.
