The glory of God · Loving kindness and mercy
First John 4:10 establishes the order: “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” This gives the words “Jesus loves you” their full weight. They point to something actually accomplished at the cross, beyond offering a comforting phrase. The song is often sung at evangelistic events to friends who do not yet know the Lord. If it remains only a warm feeling, its message becomes too light. Following with a cross-centred song or reading John 3:16 restores that weight.
