About this hymn

This is a poem spoken in a storm. It opens by asking refuge in the Lord's embrace, with the image of a young bird under sheltering wings. Psalm 57:1 prays with the same image: “Be merciful to me, God, be merciful to me, for my soul takes refuge in you. Yes, in the shadow of your wings, I will take refuge, until disaster has passed.” The second stanza admits there is no other support; the third turns towards the grace in the Lord that meets every need. Wesley wrote over six thousand hymns, and this one is often considered especially close to human weakness. Do not hurry it. It needs a slower pace and quiet accompaniment.

When to use this hymn
