About this hymn

“Come after me, and I will make you fishers for men.” (Matthew 4:19) is spoken beside Galilee, amid the ordinary work of handling nets. Peter and Andrew are called together. Mrs Alexander wrote this hymn for Saint Andrew's Day, viewing his calling through daily labour. Church tradition calls him the first-called; John records, “He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah!’ (which is, being interpreted, Christ).” (John 1:41). The hymn places calling within life's noise rather than a quiet retreat. That is especially apt today, when most believers must hear the Lord amid overtime, childcare and care for older relatives. The stanzas develop a response: following him, loving him above idols and life's concerns, and finally obeying and serving. It suits ordinations, invitations to serve and young people's commitment.

When to use this hymn
