Hope for the end of the age · New heavens and new earth
This hymn comes from a long twelfth-century Latin poem. Neale translated a section into English, through which it became widely sung. It describes the city in Revelation 21. Notice how Scripture's image differs from common imagination: New Jerusalem descends from heaven to earth, rather than being a place to which people ascend. That matters pastorally because it anchors hope in the renewal of creation rather than escape from the world. The gold and pearls come from Revelation 21:21. Singers need not treat them as a literal list of building materials; they express the city's value and splendour. It suits remembrance and year-end teaching on the last things.
