Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
The hymn makes the cross central to understanding life’s changes: amid sorrow and joy, loss and receiving, Christ’s self-giving continues to reveal God’s love. Galatians directs believers’ boasting towards the Lord’s cross; First Corinthians shows God’s saving power in the cross that the world considers weakness. While singing, release the habit of measuring yourself by achievements, status or circumstances, and consider received grace afresh. The cross also illuminates our relationships, urging humility in place of pride and forgiveness in response to others’ failings. Gratitude to the Saviour can thus become strength for faithfulness through both favourable and adverse circumstances.
