About this hymn

Wealth, fame and power appear in turn, making following Jesus a concrete choice of values. A person may have outward achievements yet remain inwardly bound by sin; knowing his preciousness gives letting go a direction. In Philippians, Paul reassesses former grounds for boasting and counts knowing Christ surpassingly valuable. Jesus likewise calls disciples to take life’s worth seriously. Singing need not make career achievement shameful, but does require honest examination of what we most fear losing. Choose something competing for the heart’s first place, pray to the Lord about it, and make a decision in money, time or relationships consistent with faith.

When to use this hymn

Dedication and resolve, discipleship, youth gatherings and life decisions.
