Isaiah 6:8 says, “I heard the Lord’s voice, saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ Then I said, ‘Here I am. Send me!’” Notice its place within the chapter: Isaiah has first seen God's holiness, confessed unclean lips and had those lips touched with a burning coal. Cleansing precedes commissioning. Reverse that order and the response becomes an enthusiastic self-nomination. After saying, “The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” (Matthew 9:37), Jesus first commands prayer to the Lord of the harvest to send workers. This song suits mission Sundays and short-term mission commissioning, especially after the sermon rather than at the meeting's emotional height.
