The pilgrim journey · Companionship and guidance
John 15 describes believers’ need of the Lord as branches remaining in the vine. Apart from Christ, people cannot bear fruit pleasing to God. Such dependence gives rise to action: God lights the road through his Word and works in people’s willing and doing. This song can honestly acknowledge our limits and ask the Lord to walk with us. Avoid understanding dependence as suspending judgement and responsibility. A mature sense of need makes us more diligent in prayer, more willing to heed Scripture, and more ready to receive correction and undertake service within the church.
