About this hymn

This song has long been attached to the story of a dying martyr in Assam, India. That account comes from a popular book, with no verifiable primary historical evidence or independent corroboration, and should no longer be told as the song's origin. Better documented research attributes it to the local preacher Simon K. Marak, who wrote it in Assamese around 1935 while serving in Jorhat. Originally two stanzas, it addressed the local congregation's shortage of singable hymns. Each stanza repeats one simple statement three times before a resolve not to turn back. Luke 14:27 says, “Whoever doesn’t bear his own cross and come after me, can’t be my disciple.” The following illustrations of building and warfare teach counting the cost first. Singing the song lightly loses its weight: the resolve comes after understanding the cost. Nor should it imply saving oneself through one act of will. Christ's call comes before our response. It suits baptism and a response of commitment.
