This hymn considers the whole Saviour to whom Jesus’ name points: he forgives sin, heals sorrow, helps the weak and remains the high priest believers can always approach. Acts identifies salvation with Jesus, while Hebrews explains his sympathy with human weakness, enabling us to seek mercy boldly. Calling on the Lord’s name expresses trust in this Saviour and belonging to him, giving worship a clear centre. Turn from your own needs towards his character and work, receiving comfort as you know him. Even with limited words and imperfect love, we can still bring sincere thanks before him and continue learning loyalty to him.
