This song travelled a long route from a Swedish original through Russian and German circulation to Hine’s English adaptation. Boberg’s nine-stanza poem of 1886 already moved from creation to redemption and the last things. Hine did not translate it line by line: drawing on a Russian version and his missionary experiences, he rewrote the first three stanzas and added the familiar final stanza in 1948. The Swedish original’s early date therefore does not establish that the familiar English or Chinese versions are also public domain. In content, the song turns from creation’s vastness to the Son’s self-giving, then towards the Lord’s return, joining general revelation to biblical revelation. Let the later two sections continue to interpret the earlier wonder at creation.
