About this hymn

Heber wrote this congregational hymn for Trinity Sunday. Its scriptural foundation is clear: Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4, one in the temple and the other before the throne. Seraphim and the four living creatures praise God with “Holy, holy, holy” (Isaiah 6:3). Interpreters often observe that holiness is the divine attribute repeated in this way. That does not make love secondary; it means God's holiness permeates all his attributes. Across four stanzas the poem sings of the persons of the Trinity, its structure as carefully ordered as a creed. It is especially suitable at the start of Sunday worship, when the congregation has just sat down with scattered thoughts and needs first to be brought before the throne. The tune NICAEA takes its name from the Council of Nicaea, which affirmed Trinitarian faith.
