About this hymn

The source is the Latin Te Deum, among the church’s oldest texts of praise, traceable to the fourth century. Angels, heavenly hosts, prophets, apostles and martyrs join in a chorus across the ages; today’s congregation adds its voice at the end of a long company. Isaiah 6:3 records heaven’s praise: “Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!” The German text is by the Catholic author Franz. English translator Walworth’s father had a Presbyterian background; Walworth himself first trained at the Episcopal General Theological Seminary, entered the Catholic Church in 1845 and was ordained in 1848, serving among the Redemptorists early in his ministry. The hymn later found a lasting place in both Protestant and Catholic hymnals.
