About this hymn

The image of moving to higher ground expresses believers’ longing to leave old fears and entanglements and stand more firmly in the Lord. In Philippians, Paul acknowledges that he is not yet perfect, but because Christ has already taken hold of him, he continues running towards the goal Christ gives. Colossians directs our thoughts to the reality of Christ’s reign. Singing this hymn can turn the pursuit of growth into specific prayer: asking the Lord to illuminate a habit we need to relinquish and strengthen a choice in which we should obey. Maturity often accumulates in ordinary faithfulness. We move forward by grace and also learn to wait humbly, so that hearts hoping for heaven become more willing to bear responsibilities on earth.

When to use this hymn
