The pilgrim journey · Sacraments: Communion and baptism
On the first Sunday of October 1855, the Scottish minister Bonar's brother asked him for a hymn after Communion. Within a day or two, he supplied this one. Published in a collection two years later, it bore the Lord's words, “Do this in memory of me.” (Luke 22:19). It has ten stanzas, from which hymnals usually select several. Its voice is very quiet, like someone speaking at the table. The opening uses the present tense: communicants draw near to the Lord by faith now. This is not yet the final, complete face-to-face encounter, but remembrance before the bread and cup, proclaiming his death and awaiting his return. First Corinthians 11:26 says, “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” One table thus connects the cross and the future. The hymn suits singing during Communion or a choir presentation as the bread is distributed.
