The pilgrim journey · Companionship and guidance
The shelter of the rock and the sustaining hand give this hymn a sense of security in being treasured and protected by the Lord. The picture in Exodus of Moses sheltered within the rock provides a background for the writer’s expression of trust; the Psalms also call the Lord a hiding place. The singing extends from support amid today’s burdens to the hope of meeting the Lord in the future. Such trust lets us acknowledge our limits and thank the Saviour for the strength he has given throughout the journey. When using the hymn on a pastoral visit, first hear what the person is currently bearing and then entrust the burden to the Lord together. The protection we sing about also reminds the church to become a community willing to accompany people and offer timely help.
Pastoral visits of comfort, worship on trust, older people’s gatherings and intercession amid trouble.
