The glory of God · Faithfulness and covenant keeping
The source is Lamentations 3, within one of Scripture's heaviest books: Jerusalem destroyed and the temple in ruins. There the prophet declares, “It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22–23). Those words about each new morning sound from the holy city's rubble. Explain that background and their weight at funerals and in suffering becomes clear. James 1:17 describes the Father of lights as the one “with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow.” The hymn suits memorials and funerals, as well as weddings and anniversary thanksgiving.
