The glory of God · Goodness and provision
Psalm 23 says goodness and loving kindness follow the shepherd’s people, but also describes the valley of the shadow of death and a table in the presence of enemies. God’s goodness appears in his trustworthy presence, mercy and faithfulness; it does not mean life will henceforth run smoothly or that prayers will be answered on our timetable. Amid grief over a ruined city, Lamentations still remembers his mercies new every morning, showing that lament and trust can coexist. Leave suffering people room to tell their stories honestly when singing this song, directing testimony towards the shepherd’s companionship through fire and valley.
