About this hymn

Wesley wrote this to be sung before going out to work, unusual among hymns more concerned with gathered worship. It treats daily work as a central setting of service. Colossians 3:23 says, “And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men”. The hymn asks to find God's presence amid daily business and for the day's labour to please him. Many believers struggle with a divide between faith and work, treating Sunday as spiritual and the rest of the week as something else. This hymn speaks directly into that divide. It suits workplace fellowships, services marking a return to work and the beginning of an academic year.

When to use this hymn

Workplace fellowships, services marking the start of work or a new academic year; teaching on the theology of work or Colossians 3.
