Acts 2:42 lists four features of the early church's daily life: the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking bread and prayer. Fellowship stands alongside teaching and the sacraments, showing that it is no optional extra to church gatherings. First John 1:7 goes deeper: walking in the light brings fellowship with one another. Fellowship therefore depends on each person's communion with God; without that, even lively company is simply socialising. The gentle melody suits opening small groups and fellowships, especially gatherings with many newcomers. It sings of belonging to the same Lord, rather than how well we already know one another.
