This hymn remembers the faith earlier generations held to amid hardship and invites believers today to carry that witness forward faithfully. Hebrews urges us to consider the outcome of our leaders’ lives and imitate their faith, while fixing our eyes on Jesus. Passing on faith requires each generation to know the Lord personally and live out the truth they have received. As we sing, we can give thanks for older people who have taught and accompanied us and pray for the next generation. First Peter reminds us to explain the reason for our hope with gentleness and reverence, joining steadfast faith with sincere love for people, so that those who come after us can see in our lives that Christ is trustworthy.
