The glory of God · Christ: glory made visible

About this hymn

The hymn does something very simple: it places Christ beside creation's loveliest things and compares them one by one. Meadows, forests, moonlight and stars each have beauty, and each stanza returns to the same conclusion. Psalm 45 is a royal wedding song; verse 2 says, “You are the most excellent of the sons of men. Grace has anointed your lips, therefore God has blessed you forever.” Most congregations can appreciate created beauty. What they need is a path leading that appreciation to Christ, which this hymn provides. Its tune is still called CRUSADERS' HYMN, but hymnological research has rejected its supposed Crusader origins. Keep the tune name without repeating the legend. The translator of the 1850 English version is unknown; Seiss's 1873 translation forms a separate tradition.
