Confession and repentance · Confession and returning
This quiet penitential chorus lets a congregation pause before prayer or Communion and offer their hearts for God’s examination. Scripture gives self-examination a definite pattern. Instead of relying on a personal inventory, the psalmist asks God to act: “Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts.” (Psalm 139:23). Paul places examination before receiving Communion: “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.” (1 Corinthians 11:28). Sing slowly and leave silence. Make the direction clear: examination leads to confession and receiving forgiveness, and should not leave the congregation trapped in self-reproach.
Preparation before Communion, prayers of confession, quiet devotions and retreats.
