In Ephesians 3, Paul prays that believers may understand the breadth, length, height and depth of Christ's love. He uses four directions in succession because one is not enough. The Chinese title draws on the dimension of depth. Many Chinese worship songs speak of love and can drift into sentimentality. This one keeps its balance by giving that love a definite object and foundation rather than a vague warmth. When leading worship, consider the transition: following this song with one about the cross gives its unfathomable depth a concrete centre. Otherwise the depth of love may remain only a feeling. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:35) provides its most natural scriptural commentary.
