Our misery in sin · Crying out and waiting
All four stanzas ask the same question: does the Lord really care? In heartbreak, on a dark road, at parting, when loved ones die—does he know? Such repeated questioning is rare in hymns, which generally hurry to an answer. Its willingness to remain with the question is precisely what offers comfort. Letting someone ask is closer to pastoral care than demanding quick belief. Only in the refrain does the hymn rest on the promise of First Peter 5:7. When leading worship, do not skip the questions and sing only the refrain; that loses half the hymn's purpose. It suits visits and the first Sunday after a church has experienced loss.
Visits, comfort and remembrance; teaching on anxiety and trust; after a church community has experienced loss.
