In John 15, Jesus calls his disciples friends on the foundation of his prior choosing, his laying down his life, and his sharing with them what he has heard from the Father. Such intimacy does not reduce the Saviour to a companion who accommodates every wish: he remains the Lord who calls people to obey his commands. Lonely, wounded or misunderstood people can pour out their hearts to Christ through this song, while also returning to his Word and the church community for support. Treating Jesus solely as an imagined listener would miss his purpose of renewing lives and leading people to love one another.
