About this hymn

The hymn offers something practical: count one thing at a time. Psalm 103:2's self-exhortation takes the same approach: “Praise Yahweh, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits”. Not forgetting requires active remembering. The hymn is easily misused to tell suffering people to stop complaining. Read carefully: it addresses people battered by storms who feel everything is lost. Counting is one step out from that situation, rather than a means of silencing them. Explain that order when leading it, so it does not wound people.

When to use this hymn

Year-end thanksgiving, Lunar New Year, anniversaries and prayer meetings amid hardship; teaching on Psalm 103.
