The pilgrim journey · Sacraments: Communion and baptism
The Latin original has been used since the Middle Ages at Pentecost, ordinations and related liturgies. Cosin's English translation gained a fixed place in Anglican ordination services from 1662. It asks for the Spirit's actual work—illumination, teaching, strengthening and presence—rather than a feeling. The Lord promises, “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you.” (John 14:26). Chinese churches sometimes discuss the Spirit mainly through experiences of gifts, or speak little out of caution. This ancient hymn returns the congregation to a whole prayer, asking according to the Spirit's names, gifts and works one by one.
