Our misery in sin · Darkness and bondage
A morning hymn that describes dawn honestly: daylight does not necessarily bring light within the heart. The second stanza admits that without the Lord's mercy shining in, the morning remains dark and the day begins without joy. Such an admission is rare in morning hymns and gives this one value. Its title for Christ draws on “the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings.” (Malachi 4:2). The Lord himself says, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). For brothers and sisters who feel low and find mornings especially difficult, the hymn supplies a prayer for his light.
