About this hymn

Written by Wesley in 1739 under the title Hymn for Easter Day, this became one of Easter Sunday's most frequently sung songs. In the familiar version, each line ends with Alleluia. These additions were not in Wesley's manuscript but were added later to fit the tune, creating a chain of acclamations. In First Corinthians 15, Paul first develops the evidence and meaning of resurrection, then taunts death as a defeated enemy: “Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?” (1 Corinthians 15:55). Those questions draw on Hosea 13:14, while the preceding verse draws on Isaiah 25:8. Verse 20 of the same chapter says, “But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruit of those who are asleep.” First fruits imply a whole harvest to follow. The hymn brings Paul's argument into congregational rejoicing. It suits opening Easter Sunday worship.
