About this hymn

Moving from the stillness of the tomb to the proclamation of resurrection, this hymn’s vivid turn helps the congregation see the astonishing force of the gospel event itself. Neither death, the sealed stone nor the guards could keep the Saviour in the tomb for ever. His resurrection reveals God’s power over death. Matthew 28 records the empty tomb and the angel’s message; 1 Corinthians explains how closely Christ’s resurrection is connected with the future of those who belong to him. As we sing, we can leave space for the weight of the Passion and burial before responding with hope to the news of resurrection. This joy enables those facing death and loss to entrust their future to the Lord who has already come out of the tomb.

When to use this hymn

Easter, gatherings on Christ’s Passion and resurrection, and services of comfort.
