Hope for the end of the age · New heavens and new earth
The image of the river of life brings heavenly hope into the hearts of those singing and helps sorrowful people open themselves to the joy God gives. Revelation depicts the water of life flowing from the throne; John also records Jesus inviting the thirsty to come to him and receive the life the Holy Spirit gives. The brief words suit repeated meditation, allowing people gradually to entrust their burdens as they sing. When sorrow has not yet lifted, the self-exhortations in the Psalms also help us continue waiting for the Lord. The church can use this song for gentle companionship and intercession for those currently facing difficulty, so that they receive support in the community and look together towards God’s promise to renew all things.
Themes of hope, small-group prayer, companionship in grief and quiet worship.
