The pilgrim journey · Sacraments: Communion and baptism
Only two four-line stanzas, the hymn is strikingly concise and subtitled Before Communion. The first names Christ as the world’s bread and wine. The second twice asks him to look with compassion: at the heart’s blood shed for him and sinners’ tears. Its voice is almost a whisper. The Lord says, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35). Paul identifies what happens at the table: “The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 10:16). Heber, an Anglican bishop, died aged forty-two while serving in India. This and his other hymns were collected only after his death.
