About this hymn

Composer Knapp first played the melody at a piano and asked Crosby what she heard in it. The words developed from the assurance of salvation the tune evoked. This assurance rests on Christ’s redemption, the Holy Spirit’s seal and God’s promises, rather than on feeling good that day or confidence in our own resolve. The poem has a strong personal testimony, while consistently grounding that testimony in salvation already received. Leading it with an exclusive emphasis on how joyful believers ought to be can burden people going through a low point. Help the congregation return to an unshaken promise when their feelings waver.

When to use this hymn

Testimony meetings, baptisms, confirmations and gospel Sundays; accompanying people seeking assurance of salvation during a low point in faith.
