Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
The cross resembles shade along a hot road, letting the weary pause and see afresh the Saviour’s price for sinners. Restful imagery joins looking at the suffering Christ: before him people acknowledge their failings and receive undeserved loving kindness. Isaiah pictures a rock’s shade in wilderness; First Peter says Christ bore sin so we might live to righteousness. Reflecting on the cross therefore includes changed direction in life. In quiet, give boasting and burdens together to him, letting his forgiveness lift us and learning to forgive those who have wounded us.
Good Friday, Communion, prayers of confession and quiet reflection.
